SenCAPTCHA is a mobile-first CAPTCHA system that works by displaying an animal picture to the user and having them rotate their phone to move a ball into the center of the animal’s eye. The results of a user study with 200 participants showed that SenCAPTCHA outperforms other existing CAPTCHAs and that it was the favorite CAPTCHA system for over half of participants.

Authentication
Passwords continue to dominate the authentication landscape. Our research seeks to strengthening passwords through the development of improved password managers, browsers, and operating systems. As part of these efforts we are working to make it easier for developers to incorporate strong password protocols. We also explore multi-factor authentication (e.g., Duo, YubiKey).
Blockchain Technology
Bitcoin's success has led to significant interest in blockchain technology, but the hype surrounding it makes it hard to know what it is best used for. In our research, we have answered these questions for researchers and engineers. We are also working towards using blockchain technology to build systems that address situational needs where there is a need for distributed trust without any centrally trusted parties.
Measurement
To solve research challenges in the most meaningful way, it is necessary to first holistically understand the problem. We do this both through measuring technical phenomenon—for example, the deployment of TLS proxies—as well as measuring human perceptions and understanding—for example, when would people use secure email. These measurements help us better design systems aiming to solve solve real-world problems.
Secure Software Development
Developing secure software is inherently difficult, and is further hampered by a rush to market, the lack of cybersecurity-trained architects and developers, and the difficulty of identifying flaws and deploying mitigations. In our research, we are exploring new software development paradigms that will help developers create secure software without requiring that every developer first become a cybersecurity expert.

The need for users to be able to encrypt their online communication and data has never been clearer—for example, to prevent widespread surveillance of Internet traffic by governments and data mining of personal information by cloud service providers. We believe it is imperative that users be able to take control of their online data, deciding when and by whom it can be accessed.

We would like to congratulate Sean Oesch for having his paper That Was Then, This Is Now: A Security Evaluation of Password Generation, Storage, and Autofill in Browser-Based Password Managers published at the 2024 USENIX Security Symposium. This evaluation looks at the security of thirteen popular password managers and covers the entire password manager lifecycle—password generation, storage, and autofill. This works identifies a range of issues in the studied password managers and provides recommendations for building better password managers.
